Cleaning up Rooftop Fire Damage in New Providence

From 2013 to 2017, 27% of all reported fires occurred in homes, causing over 10,000 civilian injuries and almost $7 billion in property damage. The most common causes of these home structure fires included cooking, electrical distribution, lighting, heating, fire-setting, and smoking. However it occurs, if it spreads to the roof, the cleanup and restoration involved can seem overwhelming even to consider.

If your New Providence residence requires a fire emergency-response team that can restore your home after disaster strikes, SERVPRO technicians are ready to help. These pros use the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards to bring homeowners a consistent and high-quality clean every time. SERVPRO is available 24/7 to handle fire-related disasters in over 1,700 franchise locations in the United States and Canada.

Protecting Your Roofing from Fire
    •    Clean your roof. Even if you use fire-resistant, Class A materials, they can still ignite and burn after long-term exposure to high temperatures. To prevent this, remove debris regularly or have a trusted professional take care of it.
    •    Clean your chimney regularly. Creosote deposits and flammable materials can spark a flame in no time under the right conditions. A clean chimney does not have flammable deposits, which means there is little organic material to fuel a fire that could spread through the chimney and onto your roof.
    •    Keep flammable debris away from your home. Trim trees, keep the area around your home clean and minimize attached structures that could allow a fire to spread.
    •    Monitor your electrical system. In many homes, wiring and electrical systems can be near or on the roof, including HVAC, lighting, and conduit pipes. Keep your electrical system in good shape and minimize debris around it to prevent an electrical fire.

SERVPRO Preserves Your Home
When occupants have vacated after a fire, SERVPRO uses a strict set of safety procedures to ensure safety during the restoration process. Openings caused by the fire are boarded up, and technicians examine the area for loose roof trusses and floor joints. If sprinklers or fire fighting efforts have saturated the area, water damage mitigation procedures are performed first.

Technicians take care to preserve pipes to prevent freezing and bursting with antifreeze in situations where access to water is restricted. SERVPRO can also implement power sources if there is no access to electricity. Technicians may deodorize the area with thermal foggers and HEPA filter air scrubbers before cleaning and taking inventory of damaged goods if substantial damage has taken place.

SERVPRO of Western Union County is always prepared to be Faster to Any Size Disaster. When you need disaster cleanup services from experienced pros, you can call (908) 791-9177.

Responding to Mold Growth in Your New Providence Nursing Home

2/17/2020 (Permalink)

Mold on a wall Let us help you get your New Providence Nursing Home back in order after mold strikes.

We Understand the Importance of Removing Mold and Improving Air Quality in Your New Providence Property

There is no mistaking the knowledge that mold colonization and exposure to the residents of your New Providence nursing home can lead to health effects. Considering the health ailments that already affect many of the guests in the facility, direct exposure to active colonization could lead to considerably hazardous conditions. The discovery of microbial threats should get handled immediately by competent professionals like our SERVPRO team.

One of the initial obstacles that exist when contending with mold damage in your New Providence nursing facility is how to navigate remediation with the care and attention that the patients and residents need. Assisted living requirements do not slow or stall out because of a developing hazardous situation in the building. Instead, our professionals can establish defined boundaries to seal off the property from the colonization and prevent the spread of spores or volatile organic compounds.

Containment barriers exist for two specific reasons: to limit the exposure of bystanders and employees to mold colonization and to increase the productivity of remediation tactics within this established zone. Thick 6mil plastic sheeting and wood framework can get constructed throughout the broad tiled hallways and seal against the walls and the ceiling drywall. This seal all around the damaged areas can help efforts like drying, air scrubbing, and controlled demolition to be less compromising to the rest of the facility.

Within this containment area, we can work on applying antimicrobial agents to areas like the linoleum flooring. However, materials such as the gypsum drywall, wood trim, and thinner ceiling drywall might require removal over abrasive cleaning or sanding techniques that might remove colonies from more durable and less sensitive materials.

You have set standards and thresholds that your medical facility must remain within to adhere to regulations regarding any potential health hazard. While our professionals can help with the removal of present colonization, it is recommended in assisted living facilities to utilize a third party hygienist to test and sample the environment after remediation to assure property management and board oversight that the problem has gotten resolved.

With so many assisted living patients to consider when mold growth gets discovered, it is critical to act immediately to stop the spread of these colonies, remove the present threat, and resolve the underlying moisture concerns that allowed microbial growth in the first place. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help in all of these areas when you call (908) 791-9177.

Flood Damage In Your Berkeley Heights Home

2/13/2020 (Permalink)

flood damaged home Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help to balance these traits for fast and thorough drying of your property.

Drying Sciences at Work in Berkeley Heights Homes After a Flood

Drying your Berkeley Heights home after a flood or water loss incident involves a complex blend of specific conditions to get met. Our grasp of the science of moisture removal and efficient drying practices are what allow our SERVPRO professionals to be leading technicians in the industry. Understanding the balance of all factors that impact the pace of drying efforts can help to not only improve the turnover time for our customers but reduces higher costs for you or your insurance.

Flood damage in Berkeley Heights homes can be a complicated situation, especially when the damage at hand has penetrated beyond the surface of materials. Standing water and moisture in structural cavities can be a considerable challenge to address. Drying a property after widespread flooding, or even localized damages, involves the same balance of three critical drying elements:

Temperature
The warmth of the environment and the surface temperature of material getting dried can both play a factor in the efficiency of moisture removal. During the often-harsh winters, the lower temperatures outside and inside the house can both play a factor in how quickly areas get dried. We have portable electric heaters that can help to bolster the warmth in the drying zone to continue maximum drying production.

Airflow
Regulating the flow of air through the structure is an important consideration when working to improve the efficiency of the drying process. Our SERVPRO professionals can utilize many air movers working simultaneously to provide a powerful evaporative process.

Humidity
As many of our drying processes involve evaporation, humidity rises following the displacement of moisture from structural elements and contents. Addressing this concern often involves the proper placement and frequency of dehumidification units. In lower temperatures, the ideal choice would be our desiccant units.

The science of drying your home after a flood involves a complex balance between these three listed elements, knowing that they are intertwined. Increases in airflow increase humidity, for example. Our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help to balance these traits for fast and thorough drying of your property. Give us a call anytime at (908) 791-9177.

Proper Planning Helps Expedite Water Removal from a Berkeley Heights Home

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

A set of road signs with the words Plan, Action, and Success on them. Water removal from your Berkeley Heights home needs to be quick, let's make a plan.

Let SERVPRO help you make the proper plans for your Berkeley Heights water damage.

When you realize the water spill in your home is too adverse to handle on your own, the next line of thought is whether you can find a professional that can complete the removal fast enough to minimize inconveniences and costs. We managed to remove water from a Berkeley Heights home in record time because of proper planning.

What Rooms or Property Section is affected?

Before taking steps for the actual water removal from the Berkeley Heights home, Our SERVPRO technicians scoped the site to establish how widespread the problem was. The leak started in a laundry on the first floor and spread to the lower floor. Such water loss situations are harder to tackle because the water undoubtedly finds a way into wall and ceiling cavities. Luckily, there was no standing water on the floors since the homeowner had turned off the mains. We used a thermal camera to check for wet spots in the ceiling and wall cavities so that we could know which areas to focus on.

What is wet and how wet is it

The amount of water or wetness left in materials determines the effort needed to dry the property. Our SERVPRO technicians know that absorbency rates vary in different materials, which affects the amount of water the materials hold. As expected, the carpeted floor held most of the spilled water. We also used moisture meters to check other contents such as upholstery and wooden furniture and fittings.

What processes are necessary?

Once armed with the information on how widespread the water loss is, there is a need to take appropriate steps to counter it. Various processes, including demolition, containment, and drying may be necessary. At home, we had to perform some demolition when opening up the staircase, some cabinets, and other assemblies. We had to replace the pad and dry the carpet, so removal was necessary. Setting up air movers and dehumidifiers helped finalize the drying process.

Planning is crucial when handling water loss situations. Call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

New Providence Warehouse Too Wet after a Storm? SERVPRO Has Solutions to Keep Your Business in Business!

1/18/2020 (Permalink)

Selecting the Correct Drying System to Remediate Flood Damage in Your New Providence Business

After the flooding of your New Providence property, drying out the structure is not as simple as merely using commercial-grade pumps and extractors to suction up the liquid water. Although aggressive and thorough removal of water is the foundation of appropriate flood remediation, the final drying step is critical. Understanding how elements of drying work together clarify why we use specific techniques and equipment when restoring your business property.

Choosing Between Open and Closed Drying Systems

Best restoration practices dictate which drying system is preferred when we plan for your New Providence warehouse flood damage recovery. For efficient drying, we must achieve a balance among temperature, air movement, and humidity, measuring and continuously monitoring the decreasing amount of moisture trapped inside porous building materials. The two systems achieve this in different ways:

Open drying systems:

  • Exchange moist indoor air with drier outdoor air, negating the need for dehumidifiers
  • Use open windows plus fans or air movers to facilitate the exchange

Closed drying systems:

  • Contain (seal) the affected area from both outside air and undamaged spaces inside the rest of building
  • Use air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to control the environment, encouraging evaporation and capture of the resulting water vapor

Outdoor Temperature Limits Use of Open Drying Systems

Although an open drying system in a large area like a warehouse is more straightforward to achieve, SERVPRO Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-trained technicians only recommend it under particular weather conditions. During the cooler and cold times of the year when the outdoor temperatures dip below 60 to 70 degrees F, it becomes tough to balance the system regardless of how dry the outdoor air is. If the outdoor air is nearly equal or more humid than the indoor air, problems with condensation or increasing the vapor load inside prevent effective drying. The result may be "inside rain."

Closed Drying System Options in Commercial Areas

Water absorbed into porous building materials and fixtures cannot be wiped off, squeezed out, or suctioned up, causing SERVPRO to consider adaptations to closed dying systems in vast commercial spaces. Partitioning flood-affected areas into smaller drying sections help accelerate the evaporation and dehumidification. We also have extensive inventories of air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers and access to additional equipment and technicians from our nationwide network of affiliated franchises to ramp up our efforts. Trailer-in desiccant dehumidifiers are powerful equipment for large volume drying efforts.

SERVPRO of Western Union County is prepared to help dry out and resolve even extensive commercial flood damage. Contact us at (908) 791-9177 to get trained crews in place and working fast.

Without always having glaring symptoms, many New Providence homeowners can overlook the initial signs and only recognize mold effects once colonies have developed. By this point, the ability to spread between surfaces and materials is fast – the situation can get out of control quickly. We have a team of qualified remediation experts accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) who can help.

Because mold can be such a common problem in our area of the country, we answer many call-outs for inspections and remediation. Why Berkeley Heights Residents Seek Local, Professional Flood Damage Restoration Services

When your home is flooded, it may seem as though the situation has got beyond your control. However, there are several tasks a homeowner can carry out to mitigate loss. By dividing and prioritizing the issues at hand, you can take positive steps toward loss recovery. Although it can be challenging to reason with water around your ankles, your first step should be to contact your insurance provider and making a claim. Depending on the situation and scale of water in your home, you may also want to consider professional restoration assistance seriously.

There are hundreds of reactions happening in a home that is suffering from flood damage here in Berkeley Heights. Microbes-which include fungi, bacteria, and viruses-present in floodwaters begin interacting immediately with the home's contents and structure. Permanent materials in the build are at a high risk of exposure to microbes in the water because they absorb both water and contaminant. At the same time, pre-existing microbes natural to a home environment begin to interact with the floodwater. These interactions can see a clean water emergency deteriorate in as little as seventy-two hours. At SERVPRO, we can respond quickly to home emergencies because our technicians are based in this community.

Natural elements always seek to establish an equilibrium. This principle means that water moves from wet areas to dry ones. In your home, a large body of water can enter crawlspaces, cavities, or become absorbed into furniture or upholstery. When this process occurs, the prospect of permanent damage is significantly increased. If removing water is slow, you may want to consider taking items out of harm's way by placing them in the upper levels of your property. Valuable possessions and documents should be a priority. SERVPRO operates specialized document restoration alongside our rapid water removal services to cover both issues.

Time is working against you when trying to deal with a flood restoration project. One of the reasons homeowners use SERVPRO is to ensure that the extent of damage is minimal. Our response times are exceptional, while our equipment allows us to remove water by the gallon using truck-mounted extractors. We can converse with you throughout service and document all aspects of service for you to pass on to your insurer.

Our team is here to help should you need us. Just contact SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177.

We Discuss Choosing The Right Extractor For Flooding In Berkeley Heights

11/23/2019 (Permalink)

flooding in home after a storm Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call whenever you need us at (908) 791-9177.

Choosing the Right Extractor for Flooding in Berkeley Heights

One of the advantages of selecting professional restoration and remediation services after flooding in your Berkeley Heights home is an extensive inventory of industry-leading equipment. A point of pride for our growing professional restoration team is the equipment, tools, and technology made available to our skilled technicians. After a flood, the right extractor can be the difference between efficient recovery and wasted time.

There are many factors in choosing the appropriate extraction equipment to address Berkeley Height's flood damage. Between pumps and extractors, the more efficiently that standing water can get removed from the structure, the less time that our professionals must spend in later removing the remaining moisture with our high-velocity air movers and dehumidification units. Because there are so many potential extraction tools available to our SERVPRO technicians, we follow criteria to determine which tool best suits the needs of your household.

Position of the Flooded Area
There are many instances where the decision of the extractor used correlates exclusively to the position of the damaged area. In two-story houses, for example, lead hoses from stationary extractors might be more challenging to manage when portable, and lightweight machines are more flexible to the needs of the house.

Severity (Depth) of the Damage
Another consideration that our SERVPRO team must make when we are assessing the need for extraction equipment is how severe the damage is. The depth of standing water can help to determine which of the equipment in our inventory is necessary, from truck-mount extractors to light wands better suited for depths under two inches for surfaces like carpets.

Available Power
The demands of the extraction equipment cannot always get met by the damaged home that our professionals work to restore. Portable extractors are versatile tools, but they require stable electricity – which can be a challenge after widespread flooding in a community. We do have trailered and portable generators to provide temporary power, or extraction tools that operate off of fuel, such as our truck-mount pumps and self-priming trash pumps.

No matter what your home needs after a flood loss, you can trust our extensive inventory of recovery tools to meet the demand. Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call whenever you need us at (908) 791-9177.

Become Familiar With New Providence Fire Damage Disaster Recovery

11/15/2019 (Permalink)

smoke and fire coming out of a house with white siding Fires can quickly affect your living space as well as the structure of your home. Partner with SERVPRO during this difficult time.

Before We Begin Cleaning Smoke Damage in New Providence Homes

As much as homeowners want to have their properties back to preloss conditions as quickly as possible, rushing to restore New Providence residences after a fire can do more harm than good. With every scenario offering unique challenges for even our professional SERVPRO fire restoration specialists, we must carefully determine the full scope of the damage, the spread of these conditions, and the most efficient and effective approaches to fully restoring the property.

Smoke damage and effects can be among the worst lingering examples of fire damage in New Providence homes after an emergency. Because of its ability to affect the property in more than one way, our Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) must stay trained in the latest and most effective practices for addressing residues, debris, and odors that smoke effects can leave behind. Before we can begin cleaning damaged areas, however, there are preliminary steps to help ultimately make these restorative actions more successful.

One of the first steps that we must take is identifying the full extent of these damaging residues. Between smoke and soot, coatings could spread out far from the initial source of the fire. Careful inspections can determine how fire and smoke moved through the structure and each surface directly impacted by residues. We would also use this opportunity to determine the type of residue, as there are different practices between restoring smoke, soot, and other coatings we might encounter after a fire.

Before we begin cleaning the residue away, we must consider the type of surface and the best approach to both capture and remove soot and smoke particles from this material. Because of a bonding that occurs, that can also lead to staining with improper cleaning techniques, taking an extra bit of time to identify the best cleaning approach for the material type protects both the material itself and prevents particulates from getting stirred up into the air.

Fire loss incidents can affect your home in many ways, but our SERVPRO of Western Union County team can help. Give us a call anytime you need us at (908) 791-9177.

Our Crews Are Ready 24/7 To Assist You With Your Scotch Plains Flood Damage

10/19/2019 (Permalink)

Our technicians cleaning the basement floors in a home with our equipment This client was surprised with how quickly and efficiently we were able to clean up the debris and water and get her basement back after flood damage.

Receding Waters Do Not Mean the End to Flood Damage in Scotch Plains

Heavy rains can bring flash flooding to Scotch Plains. Although the vast quantities of water flowing over pavement during and after a storm briefly make travel difficult, when the weather changes, the water usually recedes without significant or lasting damage. If flash flooding makes its way into your home, however, a permanent solution is not merely waiting for it to subside. Indoors, if standing water seems to disappear, it is more likely the moisture migrated within your home. Residual moisture must be found and removed.

Professional Moisture Detection

Scotch Plains flood damage requires professional attention. When absorbed into structural components or trapped in building cavities, floodwaters continually promote the deterioration of building materials and can support harmful mold growth. Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training prepares us to use moisture probes and thermal imaging technology to discover the migration patterns of flooding. We record the data as a baseline during structural drying, ensuring our flood water removal efforts are successful.

Floodwater Is a Hazard

Floodwaters seek the path of least resistance, flowing through cracks and joints to collect beneath flooring, behind walls, and in other recesses. Because even clean water is corrosive, any lingering moisture is a problem. SERVPRO technicians know floodwater can contain chemicals and other pollutants and pathogens from organic debris or human and animal waste.

Moisture Release Strategies

The increased challenges presented by contaminants found in floodwater prompts SERVPRO to facilitate a broad range of fast and effective moisture release strategies. The more quickly we remove the tainted water, the better the outcome. We might choose to cut out sections of drywall to reach into cavities. Holes drilled into baseboards or mortar joints ventilate and allow for negative air pressure equipment to suction water out. Floor mats connected to extractors pull moisture from subfloors and joists.

Inhibiting Microbial Growth

Contaminants in floodwaters can include viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Before initiating structural drying, it is essential to treat the flood-affected areas with an EPA-registered antimicrobial agent. Structural drying requires air movement, and SERVPRO works to limit any spread of pathogens by completing the disinfectant step prior to positioning and operating moisture reduction equipment.

SERVPRO of Western Union County has well-qualified crews ready 24/7 to assist when flood damage attacks the integrity of your home. Contact us at (908) 791-9177 for a comprehensive assessment and to design and implement a recovery plan.

Skills and Training of SERVPRO Remediators in Berkeley Heights

Mold remediation is a valuable service that our SERVPRO team can offer homeowners and business owners throughout Berkeley Heights. With many times of elevated humidity and moisture levels throughout the region, areas throughout New Jersey can experience damp basements and similar areas of their homes that can easily facilitate mold growth. Addressing these concerns involves a carefully crafted approach based on a thorough inspection of experienced personnel.

Not every one of the technicians on our team has accreditations through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) as Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT), so addressing mold damage in Berkeley Heights falls to these select professionals on our squad. Remediation technicians on our team are among the most knowledgeable and well-prepared for the work that they do. We even have Interactive Occupational Training (IOT) that provides advanced mold scenarios to further keep our technicians prepared for whatever comes.

One of the primary focuses of the education of our SERVPRO remediation professionals is the removal of active colonization from multiple material types. We become well versed in various types of colony removal, including soda blasting, sanding, antimicrobial products, and even oversight of controlled demolition performed by our in-house reconstruction contractors. The faster that we can employ these strategies, the less likely that colonization of mold spores can get out of control.

These same remediators must also become efficient in identifying mold growth and potential threats before they become widespread and more of a hazard. We offer a thorough inspection of the property, and because of our understanding of the symptoms of early colonization, we can often identify early-stage mold development from the presence of spotting on drywall or an undeniable musty odor in the affected region.

We strive to provide every customer with a thorough and comprehensive approach to mold colonization in their home, from the inspection upon our arrival through the need some homes have for reconstruction and remodeling. You can count on our SERVPRO of Western Union County team. Give us a call today at (908) 791-9177.

New Providence Restoration Professionals Talk Water Damage Mitigation

9/24/2019 (Permalink)

water covering living room floor No matter if the water loss event is big or small, SERVPRO of Western Union County can mitigate the damage and restore your home!

New Providence Water Damage Basics: The Mitigation Phase

When your New Providence home suffers a water loss, you cope not only with the harm done but also a steep learning curve as experts discuss recovery. Two terms that might seem interchangeable are mitigation and remediation. Instead, they represent separate phases of the restoration process, both essential to making it “Like it never even happened.” Mitigation tasks have the following purposes and implementation.

Mitigation Limits Current Damage and Prevents Further Loss

Phase one of your New Providence water damage recovery agenda includes mitigation tasks. Our project manager uses a visual analysis of the affected area and data from temperature and moisture detection devices to define the current perimeter of the water incursion. We then use the skills learned at the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training to arrest the spread and migration of water beyond that line.

Water Extraction Is Mitigation

SERVPRO’s service vehicles hold a comprehensive inventory of water extraction equipment. Mitigation starts with an exhaustive course of extraction, starting with submersible pumps if standing water is two or more inches deep. Wanded portable or truck-mounted extractors use powerful suction to clean surfaces and fixtures like carpeting of residual water. We scan using infrared cameras for temperature fluctuations that signal the presence of trapped water behind, under, or above structures.

Planned Demolition Can Aid Mitigation

Mitigation can include controlled demolition to access the hidden water. Sections of drywall removed as “flood cuts” or punched or drilled “weep holes” release water from places it flowed and seeped. Choosing to take these steps might seem to worsen the damage. Instead, they permit SERVPRO crews to prevent the progressive deterioration of porous building materials and avoid secondary issues such as mold damage. We collect and dispose of as much of the hidden moisture as possible.

Structural Drying Completes Mitigation

Once the bulk of the water exits your home via pumps and extractors, structural drying commences. Thorough extraction does not eliminate the need for structural drying, but it significantly shortens the time necessary to reach normal moisture levels. SERVPRO Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians use the data gathered during the assessment phase and moisture metering of similar types of structural components in unaffected areas of the house to determine drying goals. Air movers and heaters create ambient conditions that make the water absorbed by building materials evaporate. Then our dehumidifiers capture and collect the water for permanent disposal.

SERVPRO of Western Union County has a trained workforce and cutting-edge equipment required to mitigate water damage. Confine the current damage and prevent further loss by calling us at (908) 791-9177.

Quicken Your Water Damage Remediation Process With SERVPRO

Bridal Shop With Dresses Make sure that water damage does NOT affect those gorgeous gowns by contacting SERVPRO at the first sign of excess water.

Variety Helps When Restoring Commercial Water Damage in Affected New Providence Bridal Shops

Water damage affecting stores can happen any time from accidental or negligent leaks. When that happens, you should focus on how to save items and restore the store to its preloss state. In a bridal shop, a wide range of issues can develop, including secondary damage affecting high-value items such as gowns. A response plan that relies on variety is likely to produce a better outcome.

Commercial water damage in your New Providence bridal shop is likely to affect many areas. While most of the damage may be from the water pooling on floors and other surfaces, there are other ways the incident can affect your store. Contents made of fabrics such as gowns have hygroscopic properties meaning they can easily absorb moisture from the air, which can ruin them. Our SERVPRO technicians anticipate such problems and can help by moving the contents from your facility or to a section of the property unaffected by the spill. We can also take further steps such as sealing doorways with plastic sheets to limit air movement between affected and unaffected areas, thus limiting the effects high levels of humidity might have on your contents.

The restoration process differs at different stages. Immediately after discovering the spill, removing water from visible surfaces is the main priority. Having efficient extraction equipment is crucial to ensure that no standing water remains in the structure after 24 hours. After dealing with standing water, there is a need to address water in concealed areas such as subfloors or wall cavities.  Our SERVPRO technicians have access to a wide variety of equipment, including high-pressure pumps, truck-mounted water extractors, and submersible pumps. We also have specialized cavity-drying systems, which help us remove moisture from concealed areas with minimal demolition.

Drying moisture remnants from the shop is necessary for comfort and preventing microbial growth. Various types of dehumidifiers can help dry the property to the desired level. Our SERVPRO technicians use different varieties of dehumidifiers, including conventional refrigerant, low grain refrigerant and desiccant dehumidifiers. Conventional ones are efficient when drying up to 55gpp humidity level. If we need further drying, we can use LGR dehumidifiers which can achieve levels as low 40gpp.

Water loss situations can be full of surprises, so preparation is necessary. Call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (908) 791-9177 to help provide a variety of solutions that make it, "Like it never even happened."

Powerful Remediation Tools Used in Damaged New Providence Homes

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

Mold spots all over a wall. Don’t let mold take over your New Providence home, let us help.

SERVPRO knows their way with mold let us take over.

Remediation differs significantly from contractors offering you mold removal for your New Providence home. With the concentration of mold spores in every available environment you encounter, complete mold removal is not practical or possible. Instead, our remediation professionals work to remove colonies and recover the damage that mold growth has allowed in your house.

Choosing a team of professionals might not seem like an obvious choice to handle mold damage in New Providence homes, especially considering that many property owners do not see the pressing threats of mold growth. In addition to potential health effects that could occur from exposure to colonies, materials can decay and erode while hosting mold colonies. Not only can this become a harmful situation when these materials must get replaced, but employing secondary contractors or attempting reconstruction on your own can be an overwhelming challenge.

By choosing our SERVPRO team to help manage your mold situation, you are not only employing a division of esteemed professionals accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in Applied Microbial Remediation (AMRT), Water Restoration (WRT), and other facets of recovery. You are also employing a group of licensed contractors with years of experience in the building trades to help manage controlled demolition, emergency construction solutions, containment strategies, and the ultimate reconstruction needs of the property.

Mold is multi-faceted in the effects it can present to a home, and addressing each of these concerns is the specific responsibility of our trusted remediators. With cutting-edge equipment that can address deodorization, air quality, cleaning, disinfection, water removal, and drying, we can address all phases of mold recovery with the same group of professionals. We can also offer our customers long term solutions to reduce moisture and dampness in problematic areas to prevent recurrences following soon after we leave.

We strive to provide our customers with a tailored experience that suits the needs of their home precisely. In mold damage situations, we have an elite team of qualified technicians that can help with the removal of colonies and the restoration of the damage that the organism causes. Give our SERVPRO of Western Union County team a call if you suspect mold growth in your home at (908) 791-9177.

Why Remediation And Not Mold Removal For Your New Providence Home

There is substantial confusion to what qualified technicians can do in your New Providence home or business to contend with present mold growth. With the rapid spread of this hazardous organism, you need to know what your options are as soon as possible. The best solution is trusting in the accredited and renowned remediation division of our SERVPRO team. Our technicians have endorsements through both the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI.) Combined, these accreditations provide skilled remediation assistance to your doorstep in a short time after you call.

While there might be numerous approaches for mold damage in New Providence homes, you must first appreciate your need for professional mold remediation. Many area cleaning and restoration teams might offer mold removal services, but this is not possible. Spores exist naturally in every environment, so there is no simple approach or compelling reason to remove them all. In any of these situations, the objective is to limit the damage that actual spreading mold colonization causes, and that begins with a thorough assessment of the property.

Remediation involves a substantial amount of equipment and products, as the objective is to limit the spread of these conditions as much as possible. Our SERVPRO team can catalog where mold colonization exists and what materials might need controlled demolition or mold colony removal strategies. With the use of practices like antimicrobial sprays, sanding, and soda blasting, we can often remove the entire organism non-invasively.

Because of the potential for volatile organic compounds and other airborne threats, addressing active colonization quickly is vital. We have air filtering equipment like our hydroxyl generators and negative air machines that can help to prevent the spread of active spores and any debris circulating through the affected areas. Controlled demolition strategies can prevent the time and money invested in making mold losses “Like it never even happened.”

Mold can catch homeowners by surprise. With so many options to choose, you can count on our SERVPRO of Western Union County team to provide an honest and thorough assessment followed by the most efficient mitigation and restoration practices available. Give our skilled technicians a call anytime that you need us at (908) 791-9177.

During this inspection, our SERVPRO professionals might utilize powerful and productive detection devices, including thermal and infrared imagery. These tablets our team uses can see beyond walls and identify moisture pockets that could allow further material deterioration or encourage mold colonization.

The faster that our team can address concerns like standing water and widespread saturation, the better able to protect installed materials and the contents of your home we become. We have sophisticated tools that can rapidly remove high volumes of water, including our submersible pumps, trash pumps, and truck-mounted extractor vehicles. Our options can suit every scenario that your property might face, helping us to quickly identify the best approach and get right to the vital drying phase.

As content management is also one of our strengths as a recovery team, we consider our restoration of these items following pack-out processes is another mitigation tactic that our customers can appreciate. Many insurance policies do not adequately protect homes damaged by a flood, and our ability to protect lightly damaged items can prove invaluable to the final restoration costs.

Every home presents unique challenges to overcome after flooding, but our SERVPRO of West Union County team has the skills and equipment to help. You can reach our professionals anytime by calling (908) 791-9177.

Space Heater Safety

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

When the weather begins to cool down, the use of things like space heaters will continue to increase. If used improperly, they can cause some serious damage. Luckily, there are a few ways to try and avoid this!

When using a space heater that burns fuel, like a kerosene heater, always use the manufacturer's specified fuel.

Another important idea to remember is to always turn of portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. If not, an unsupervised space heater can cause an unpleasant surprise.

The last tip to remember is to plug the space heaters directly into outlets, never into an extension cord or power strip.

By following these simple tips, we hope you are able to avoid a visit and call to us here at SERVPRO of Western Union County!

Grilling Safety Tips

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

With barbecue season upon us, we find more and more that tragedy can strike due to grills. Although it seems like something we use daily, without the proper precautions, it can be extremely dangerous. However, we have a few tips and safety precautions you can follow when deciding to grill.

  1. Only use grills outdoors. The use of propane and charcoal barbecue grills indoors can cause a fire in the blink of an eye.
  2. Place the grill away from your home as well as other things that may catch fire. If something goes wrong, your grill can ignite in flames and cause everything around it to as well.
  3. Always clean your grill. Sometimes, when the grill has a buildup of excess grease or fat from a previous barbecue, that can cause flames to jump up higher than normal. This can prove dangerous for you and the people around.
  4. Finally, never leave the grill unattended. Make sure that someone is always around the grill in the event that something does go wrong.

Even if you follow these precautions, tragedy still can strike. If you find yourself in that situation, call SERVPRO of Western Union County. We're here to help.

Fire Safety

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Partnered with Kidde, Nationwide, Capital One, FedEx Corporation, Grainger, and State Farm, the American Red Cross has taken an initiative to help prevent home fires. According to the Red Cross, seven people every day die from a home fire. In addition, thirty six people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every single day. This results in over seven billion dollars in property damage annually. The Red Cross suggests ways to help keep your family safe in the event of a tragedy like a home fire.

  1. Practice your two minute drill: The Red Cross suggests practicing the escape route you and your family would take in order to escape safely from a house fire in under two minutes.
  2. Test your smoke alarms monthly: The Red Cross suggests to check the smoke alarms monthly soon in the event of a fire, you and your family are alerted as soon as it is detected.

Western Union County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action!

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Fort Lee will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Extinguisher Protocol

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

According to OSHA, the most common emergency small businesses must plan for is a fire. In fact, OSHA requires employers to thoroughly train workers not only on how to use an extinguisher properly, but also how to accurately asses a situation and determine when evacuation is the safest course of action. You never know when a fire is going to occur, so it helps to be prepared.

PASS Method

When using a fire extinguisher, the acronym almost everyone is popular with is PASS. PASS stands for

  • Pull the pin on the extinguisher
  • Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire

By following this method and keeping the acronym in the back of your mind, you no longer have to worry about fires in the break room. If the situation does arise and you need help with the aftermath, call SERVPRO of Western Union County at (201) 496-6024.

What To Do When a Pipe Bursts

7/14/2019 (Permalink)

A pipe burst can happen at any time. When it does, people are often left unsure of what to do. Here at SERVPRO of Western Union County, we are equipped to deal with that type of situation in the best way possible. While you wait for us to get to the scene, there are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Turn of the water to your house. If the water remains on, odds are the water will continue to leak or even flood. By shutting off the source, you are reducing the amount of damage done to your house.
  2. If the pipe continues to leak or drip, use a bucket to collect the water to contain the problem.
  3. If the pipe breaks in a wall or ceiling, switch off the power at the main breaker and avoid electrical fixtures or wiring. The mix of wires and water can be extremely dangerous.

We are trained to help and deal with these kinds of situations. If you ever find yourself in that place, give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Categorizing a Water Damage

7/14/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, they identify the extent of the damage by categorizing the risk and immediate threat the water poses.

Category

Water is categorized to describe how dirty and unsanitary the water is.

  • Category 1 - The source of the water is sanitary and it does not pose a risk. However, if left untreated, it could change categories and become unsanitary.
  • Category 2 - The water is significantly contaminated and it can cause a human to become sick if they come in contact with it.
  • Category 3 - The water is the most unsanitary and contaminated and contains harmful pathogenic or toxigenic agents.

Water is categorized not only for the safety of the homeowner but for our crew as well. By categorizing the water, it also allows us to use the proper chemicals and equipment to deal with the task at hand. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (201) 496-6024.

Mold Growth in Your Commercial Building

7/13/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is not something anyone wants to deal with. In fact, it's something they should never have to deal with. However, sometimes mold strikes and when it does, it's no fun. There are some ways to reduce mold growth and lower the risk of it growing in your commercial building!

What Causes Mold?

The key to mold growth is moisture. Mold can result from something as simple as an increase in humidity. Although that is not something we can control, there are other times when mold can grow but we can prevent it. Mold can be a result of:

  • Leaking Pipes
  • Leaks in the Roof
  • Condensation
  • Flooding

All of these have to do with moisture. To avoid mold growth, check regularly for leaks or flooding. Mold only needs between 24-48 hours to grow. By checking regularly, you are slimming the chances of allowing the mold to grow. To prevent condensation, if you keep the temperature of the building slightly warmer, condensation will not form.

Mold is no fun. In the event that you encounter it in your commercial building, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call and we'll help you right away.

Storm Safety

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Although everyone is excited and eager for summer, I'm sure everyone is not so eager to have to deal with thunderstorms. Each summer, we experience thunderstorms that seem to appear in the blink of an eye. Often times, these storms are accompanied by high winds that can cause some damage. With that being said, we have a few safety precautions that you can take if you know a storm is on the way.

First off, make sure you are not in a body of water. Although this is usually the first one that comes to peoples' minds, it is one of the most important. It can be deadly if you are in a pool or lake when a storm arrives.

In addition, make sure furniture and other things such as umbrellas or pool floats are away in secure as to not be blown away.

Lastly, make sure you have extra food and water in case of a power outage.

If you follow these general safety tips, I'm sure no storm will be a match for you!

Preparing for a Hurricane

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

With hurricane season quickly approaching, the importance of being prepared increases. Follow these guidelines from the CDC to make sure you and your family stay safe in the event of a hurricane.

  1. Make a plan. It is important that even if there is no immediate risk of a hurricane or storm that your family has a plan in place in the event one occurs.
  2. Prepare an emergency food supply. The CDC recommends that you have at least a 3-5 day supply of food on hand. They also recommend foods that have a long storage life, require little to no cooking, refrigeration, or water, and that meet the needs of babies and pets.
  3. Prepare an emergency water supply. During an event like a hurricane, water supplies can become contaminated. Therefore, it is crucial that you have at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.
  4. Get safety products. Things such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, blankets, and batteries are crucial to have in case the power goes out or a fire occurs.

Although you can never fully prepare for a natural disaster, if you follow these guidelines, you will be as most prepared possible. In the event you do encounter a hurricane or tropical storm, SERVPRO of Western Union County is here to help. Give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Classifying a Water Damage

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, we not only categorize it, but we classify the damage as well.

Classification

Water damages are classified based on the amount of water as well as the material involved in the damage.

  • Class 1 - This is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Only a portion of a room is affected or a larger area with minimal moisture absorbed. There is little to no wet carpet present.
  • Class 2 - This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. At least an entire room with carpet is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 - This involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. In this class, the water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpets, etc. are saturated.
  • Class 4 - This class relates to special drying situations. For example, some materials may require longer drying times and even different methods.

Classifying water damages is vital to our evaluation. It lets us know what type of equipment we need to use, the extent of the damage, and how long we can expect it to take. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (201) 496-6024.

Fire Safety in Commercial Buildings

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Although we like to think tragedy will never strike, unfortunately, it does. Whether it be in your home, on the road, or at work, it can come when you are least expecting it. However, some things can be prevented and lives can be saved if you have a plan of action in emergency situations!

Plan of Action in a Commercial Building

Commercial buildings can often be the most deadly forms of tragedy. If in the event of a fire at home, people know where they can and can't go and how to get there. However, at work, that might not be the case. It is extremely important that employees know where to exit in case of a fire while at work. We recommend a few things to help.

  1. It is best if there are exit signs posted around the building as well as pictures depicting the route to the nearest exit. If people are aware of the exits as well as the routes they can take to get there, they will be able to act more efficiently in an emergency situation.
  2. We also recommend commercial buildings have fire drills at least once a month. By conducting fire drills, employees of a commercial building can familiarize themselves with the nearest exit and the quickest route to get out safely.

By implementing these tips, commercial buildings can help reduce the severity of a tragedy and prepare people in the event that it occurs.

Check out this before and after!

A commercial building in Fanwood, NJ called us recently about a sewage backup in one of their bathrooms. We got a crew chief out to them the same day so we could see what we were dealing with. As the temperatures begin to drop and winter closes in, it can sometimes be difficult to keep warm with the wrath of winter against you. However, we have a few tips to help keep you warm all winter long!

The use of area rugs can be extremely helpful in the winter. This simple addition helps to insulate rooms with hardwood or tile floors and regulates the temperature inside your home.

In addition to using an area rug, a helpful tip is to close the fireplace damper when the fireplace is not in use. By closing the fireplace damper, you are preventing the warm air from escaping from your home.

By utilizing these couple tips, you can make sure you and your family stay warm all winter!

Common Breeding Grounds for Mold

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold tends to grow in warm, dark, moist environments. It feeds off moisture and only needs about 24-48 hours to begin to grow. It is important that you regularly check these locations in your home to avoid mold growth.

  • Bathrooms - Mold tends to grow in bathrooms due to the increased temperature as well increase in moisture. Regularly check around your tub, shower, and sink.
  • Kitchen - Kitchens are also a popular place for mold to grow because of the increased temperature and moisture. Check by the sink as wells as behind the refrigerator and dishwasher.
  • Basement - Basements are common for mold due to the increased temperature and darkness. Check regularly.
  • Laundry Room - Like the bathroom, kitchen, and basement, laundry rooms are susceptible to mold because of the humidity and moisture from laundry machines.

Although these are common places for mold to grow, it is still possible for it to grow elsewhere. We recommend checking the entire house regularly. If you do encounter mold, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (908) 791-9177.

Signs of Mold in Your Home

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Often times, mold goes undetected in homes. However, there are a few signs that might point to mold as an issue in your home.

  • Smelling a Mold Odor - If mold is hiding in your walls or other places you may not see, the only clue that mold is there is the smell. If you think you smell mold, inspect your house immediately.
  • Signs of Water Problems - Water stains or discoloration on walls, floors, or ceilings in your home could show that you have a moisture problem. If you have a moisture problem, it increases the chances of you having a mold problem.

Conditions in Western Union County Might Be Right For Mold

7/12/2018 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Western Union County to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (908) 791-9177

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Western Union County for mold remediation services.

How to Prevent Mold Growth

7/12/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is more than a pest; it can be dangerous. Mold in a home can cause health effects. In order to prevent these health effects and mold in general, we have a few tips to prevent the growth of mold in your home.

  1. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold needs moisture to grow. By drying wet areas immediately, it eliminates the surface for mold to grow.
  2. Make sure your home is properly ventilated. When a home isn't properly ventilated, appliances that produce moisture can also be the cause of mold.
  3. Keep mold off of household plants. Due to the moisture in the soil, plants are a perfect place for mold to grow and then eventually, spread. Avoid this by monitoring your plants and making sure they stay mold free.

In the event you do encounter mold, give SERVPRO of Western Union County a call at (908) 791-9177 so we can help.

Does Your Western Union County Home Have A Mold Problem?

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – (908) 791-9177
